To me, Lemon balm is quite the sleeper in the medicinal herb realm. Few know exactly what a wide range of benefits it offers. The Latin of it is Melissa officinalis. Melissa was the goddess of bees and honey, and there's this lovely saying that if you have lemon balm near your hives, you'll never have unhappy bees. <3
Lemon Balm promotes longevity. It is a gentle sedative and calming herb, especially useful for treating nervousness and anxiety in adults and over excitement in children. It is my #1 go to relieving my anxiety without making me sleepy. I will take a dropper full or two before a social setting or event.
Lemon balm has been used medicinally for centuries to address sleep disturbances, including restlessness and insomnia. It is a gentle nervine used to calm the nervous system, both central and peripheral. It encourages restful sleep, especially for those who have trouble falling asleep. In one study, parents reported their children slept more peacefully throughout the night with lemon balm supplementation. Lemon balm is calm and gentle enough for children and infants, yet strong enough for adults!
Another beneficial use for this amazing little herb is as a digestive add. It is carminative & antispasmodic which dispels gas and bloating, decreases spasms. Take before eating a meal or when indigestion hits. A tincture can also be applied to a cold sore to reduce the duration.
Lastly, lemon balm acts as a thyroid suppressant which quiets an overactive thyroid (ie Graves’ Disease or hyperthyroidism).
